As the university library’s preservation blog recently announced, we are now very excited to have a Digital Collections site which contains images from some of our collections. In addition to the collections highlighted on the homepage, other collections can be found by using the Advanced Search or the “Browse a collection” drop down menu.
If the ISU Fashion Show this past weekend made you curious about previous fashions, you can visit the Fashion Plates Collection. Right now the collection contains images from the Mary Barton Fashion Illustration Collection (RS 21/7/9). The digital collection contains a selection of images from the collection – if you are interested in seeing what else the collection might hold, please take a look at the collection’s finding aid. A link to the finding aid each image is from can also be found in the information below each of the images. We hope in the future to have more images from the collection added, perhaps of fashion plates from other collections.
Other digital collections include images from the Descartes Pascal Papers, Alexander Lippisch Papers, Christian Petersen Papers, and University Photographs. Correspondence, images, and other materials have been pulled together from a variety of collections for the digital George Washington Carver Collection. (It should be noted that most documents from the George Washington Carver Collection are not yet part of the digital collection). There is also a collection of VEISHEA images, and issues (1934-2007) of the student literary magazine Sketch.
Things are constantly changing, and new collections are being added, so check back often!
This is one of the many images available under University Photographs. It is a 1923 VEISHEA float of the Department of Architectural Engineering. For those of you wondering what VEISHEA is, it is an annual spring student-run celebration here on campus and is an acronym for the five original colleges at Iowa State – Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Industrial Science, Home Economics and Agriculture.
